About Me
My name is Andrew.
I’m a New England-based theatre maker specializing in creating productions of Shakespeare’s plays using a “quick-raise” process derived from Elizabethan/Jacobean theatrical practice and fused with modern innovations.
I’m the instigator of Vicious Mole Theatre Collective, a theatre project about creating weird stuff in weird places.
I’m a founding member of the The Shakespeare Ensemble, an international company exploring contemporary approaches to Shakespeare’s rehearsal & performance practices, and a founding producer with the Bridge Ensemble.
In both of the Ensembles and frequently in other contexts I work closely with my friend, collaborator, & comrade Ben Crystal. We facilitate/direct productions together, perform together, and have even undertaken a pilgrimage from Wales to Athens together to pay a visit to some of the first theatres.
I am one half of Cod & Karp a somewhat quixotic company focused on very small, focused, minimalist productions of classic, contemporary, and devised works. Ariana Karp is the Karp in Cod & Karp, my comrade-in-arms, and my very frequent acting partner.
I tend to work frequently, repeatedly, and over long terms with ensembles whose ethos and individuals I dig. Currently I am an Associate Artist with Incite Shakespeare Company and an Artistic Associate with Elsewhere Shakespeare. I work frequently with Theater in the Open. Each of these collaborations was born out of my work as a guest facilitator, in which I guide established acting ensembles in the use and sometimes-abuse of the ensemble-led “quick-raise”.
Earlier in my career I worked for roughly a decade each with Advice to the Players, Seven Stages Shakespeare Company, the The Barnstormers Theatre, and New Art Theatre and was deeply shaped as an artist by each of these relationships.
I’ve also written and self-published a book of poetry.
Here are some specific things I’m proud of:
- devising & continuing to devise Shakespeare’s Duets with Ariana Karp, a two-person exploration of relationship scenes (duets) from throughout Shakespeare’s plays
- co-produced a four-day quick-raise of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in 2022 & 2025, using a new, ensemble-created dramatic adaptation of the novella, which was performed under candlelight in 12th- and 13th-century churches throughout North Wales
- co-producing a three-week, three-show tour of Japan in 2019, with four days to raise the three shows which were then performed around the country in Original Pronunciation. I facilitated the production of Hamlet for that tour, and performed as Rosse, Juliet, and Gertrude
